Has anybody had any problems with car alarms in their mada's? I purchased my mada in July 05 and recently the alarm has been going off like crazy. My alarm, which was installed by Nissan, is not one that goes off from vibration or audio. My best guess is that there is a short somewhere causing the alarm to go off, what seems every 10-15 minutes. What is weird is that it only goes off at night. I know that nobody is messing with it because it is inside my garage.
1. There is no Nissan Alarm. What you have was intalled by the dealer. Typically what happens is the dealer calls a local shop and sets up a deal for alarms. I know, I used to do this. The progression is: Shop buys alarm for $150 for parts. Shop charges dealer $300 for alarm install. Dealer charges $500 from car buyer.
2. The only benefit from buying the alarm from the dealer is convience and warranty. However, the convience is usually an inconvience as you need to wait for them to get it put in instead of taking possession earlier and scheduling the install at your convience. Also, the warranty is usually a moot point as quality shops will warranty their work with as good but usually better warranty than the one you get with the car. At my shop, we warrantied the work for the life of the car.
3. It sounds either like a short, or that you have a vibration sensor, or a motion sensor. Vibration are set off by a sharp blow by not by rocking. Motion are the opposite. Test the alarm for both. Ideally you want both. The first protects from a sharp blow like busting the window. The second from towing.
4. Since only you have this alarm, the only thing you can do is bring it back to your dealer and have them get the people that installed it to troubleshoot it. Call ahead so they can coordinate getting the techs there or better still, find out who did the work and go straight to them.
