2005 QX56 ( I guess I should put this into a signature, lol.)
I have owned this vehicle for a few months. I saw a sticker under the hood the other day, stating the car was equipped with a DEI remote start. This coupled with a corded "thing" in the a pillar on the driver side that a a "KX" logo. Found a thread on here bout these being installed by dealers. The Key fob the previous owner supplied with the truck was labeled AutoMate. He never mentioned it to me. I will assume that he had no idea either. This morning I decided to try it out. Sure enough, the car cranks. Not sure what to do. Leave it alone? Update the thing to a newer model? Remove it?

Fear of what? Your truck driving off by itself? Lol
Fear that it is another piece of old technology waiting to fail. This comes from my photography background. See, I am an avid film shooter. Film is shot on old cameras. I have had several electronic cameras just stop working, then I either have to source another or get this on repaired. Usually at a high cost. Several years ago, I owned two very similar medium format film camera. A Mamiya RB67 Pro S. Fully manual camera. zero electronics. If it fails, it will only be a mechanical fix. Rather simple. The other was an RZ67 Pro. This was a newer version of the RB67 but required a battery. I used both of them. After having other 35mm cameras fail, I decided to sell the RZ67. I still shoot the RB67 to this day. In the industry I work in, obsolete electronics get replaced during any rebuilds. So the aftermarket remote start to me is a bit sketchy.

I don’t think they can fail in such a way that would make your vehicle inoperable. I’d leave it alone.

I took my QX56 to a shop today to try and get my trailer wiring working. I had checked all fuses and realays, but I was only getting 12v acc, reverse lights, running lights, and ground. They ended up having to install a tail light converter, as I need to be on the road next friday. When I picked up the truck, the tech came back and told me that the remote start was the worst wiring he had ever seen and recommended removing it. So after I get back from Alabama, I will get an appointment to get this rats nest taken care of.
