2019 Armada Platinum AWD with 53k miles. I’ve only had this vehicle for a couple months but have become obsessed with engine noise since reading about the cylinder #7 TSB. I swear I am hearing a knocking noise that is only audible at a stop and when the vehicle is in drive or reverse because the engine speed drops low enough for the knocking sound to manifest. In park or driving I don’t hear it.
Ive brought my Armada into Nissan and a local mechanic shop and have had #7 and all 8 cylinders bore scoped. Results from both locations came back with a response of the engine having no abnormal wear.
Any chance you kind and more experienced folks could take a listen to the video and tell me if there is a noise or I’m just a crazy person?

Thank you for listening and responding. Nissan mechanic reports that they didn’t hear anything. Vehicle is under warranty still and was hoping to have something that addresses my concern of the noise, but if they don’t hear anything there isn’t much I can do.

you can try another nissan shop for a second opinion, or go turn on another model on the lot and record the audio in the same way you did this. i had a 2012 qx for about 9 years and it never had that knock sound. just the "clicky" sound of the design of the DI engine.

im sorry to hear you are having some push back from them.

Definitely not normal unless its a singer sewing machine. Sound’s just like the dreaded knock many of the later VQ’s are plagued with.

Thanks for providing feedback. Nissan scoped #7 per the TSB and said it “didn’t look horrible”. The actual tech who did the work wrote that they heard nothing in response to my engine noise complaint, but the lead tech insisted I bring it back to further attempt a diagnosis. So, I’m bringing it in tomorrow morning and going to hand the keys off to them and tell them I’ll take it back after they give me a good answer on the noise. If they insist they don’t hear anything, then it’s off to the next Nissan dealership I guess.

on a side note, I’m fairly certain the noise is louder after the engine warms up.

im not a mechanic but i clearly hear the noise. i drove my 2012 qx as a daily driver for nearly 10 years and i know exactly how the engine should sound. there is for sure something rattling or loose or whatever in the block.i would take the sound clip you posted here and go to another nissan/infiniti shop and play it for them and see if they hear what we are all hearing.

Any updates? If the dealer thinks it's normal, I'd have them start up your truck and start up a '23 Armada on the lot - there is definitely something going on there.

So, the Nissan dealer wound up keeping it over night. The first night they called and said they couldn’t hear anything and stated the same the next morning. While Nissan kept my car overnight I talked to a salesperson about getting me appraised for a trade in. I figured this was a good way for them to acknowledge something otherwise they get stuck with this knocking vehicle and have to give me good money on my trade in. The next morning when I went in to pick the Armada up I stopped to talk the the salesperson about my appraisal. I was informed the GM checked my car out and stated it was knocking, but the GM was ok with that because it will be covered under manufacturer warranty. I walked right over to the service shop and informed them what the GM said, but they insisted that they heard nothing out of the ordinary. The actual tech, guy behind the desk, and I walked over to my Armada and replicated the knock. They refused to hear it. Despite me hearing it, despite what the GM stated. I was kinda done with the whole situation at that point. I wound up going to a Chevy dealer in the same network and trading it in on the higher end of the appraisal range. Either I’m an indignant crazy person or the service shop was really screwing me over. Sucks cause I really liked that thing and wanted to keep it for a long time. First Nissan ever and I only kept it for a couple months.

edit: they didn’t have any Armadas on the lot for comparison.

Why am I not surprised by Nissan's so-called tech and service dept. refusing to acknowledge the actual problem, literally right in front of his face. You did the right thing by getting rid of the truck and no longer having to deal with the incompetency of that Nissan lack-of-service dept. Enjoy the replacement ride!

Yep - I agree with Primo, smart move to dump that one. So, what did you trade for???

Went with a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab Hemi 5.7 with 22k miles. Thought about purchasing new, but holy cow those prices. More or less the exact same new 2023 truck was over $30k more than what I paid for this one. I’m ok with the compromise. Many years ago I purchased a brand new 2013 Ram 1500 and ran it to 131k miles with zero issues other than a burnt out headlight. Hopefully this one treats me just as well.

like I said before, I didn’t want to get rid of the Armada but with that warranty clock ticking away and my dealership experience I was getting really uncomfortable.
