something interesting about rattles !

I just wanted to share something with you guys. aside from my armada i also own a 1999 Pathfinder and last week my wyfe told me that there were some rattles coming from the back. First i pull the hatch cover off to see if there were any loose parts back there and i found none. Next i had her drive the car while i was in the back seat trying to figure out where it was coming from. my next move was to open the hatch door while my wife was still driving and there it was. These rattles were coming from (believe it or not) the weather stripping around the hatch opening. I went home and took a piece of rag and some armorall and applied armorall to the weather stripping around the hatch and while i was at it i did all the doors. went out for a spin and all the rattles were gone. it is amazing i would have never thought that rattles came from dry weatherstripping. all you guys may want to try dressing you weatherstripping to see if that's your problem. there's nothing to lose trying this. let me know.

Yep

I finally fixed my door rattles!

Same thing- rattling, rattling. I noticed that when opening the doors I would hear the weatherstripping make this suction type sound. I put some felt stripping behind the weatherstripping (on the body side) and their gone! I'm going to the store today to get some more to do every section where there's weatherstripping on the body side- bottom of the doors, rear gate, etc.
The dealer sprayed a bunch of something oily around my doors and the noise went away a little for 2 days. Now it's back even louder.

But I like the felt under the weatherstripping approach. adjmcloon, can you provide more details and even pictures? I would give an arm and a leg to be able to once and for all get rid of those damn noises!

How does the felt stay stuck on there?

Thanks!

good for you !! I am hoping this is everybody's problem. I can't believe that nissan has messed up on weatherstripping after all these years.

depending on what was used (like wd-40) that stuff dries up real fast and you are back to square one in no time. armorall soaks into rubber and can last a long time. the felt trick sounds good too but the only thing i am skeptical about the felt is you have to stick it to the body side of your car and what if it starts peeling off then you have all this glue to deal with. if it's good adhesive like 3m double sided tape then you're good to go if not when it starts getting hot during summer all those adhesives melt.
Here you go

Ok guys,

This fix really, really works! I have eliminated easily 80% of my rattles.

You can use felt strip with adhesive backing, or simply go to Wal Mart in the fabric dept. and get the 6 ft box of velcro for $5- you'll then have 12 ft of material you can use. The velcro has a sticky side and a cloth side.

Pull the weatherstripping off that is attached to the body at inside top of the door holes. You'll know which one I'm referring to by seeing the grey trim strip on the inside of the cab up around the door sill. Pull that off, and just put your felt tape or 1/2 velcro strip along the door sill on the out side metal lip. Put the stripping back on, being careful to push the grey strip back into place on the inside of the cab. Problem solved! You'll be amazed at the difference if your ride is anything like mine. I can't believe the fix was this easy- I've been chasing it and couldn't eliminate it. I mean, who would have thought the weatherstripping would make a clicking noise?

I did every sq. inch for all 4 doors and the rear gate, and it's night and day. Now all I have are 2 seat squeaks and some console rattle and I will (hopefully) be rattle free!

Maybe I can finally enjoy this thing after the past year. Lord, let's hope so.

I will try to post pics tomorrow- got to run back to Wally World and get camera batteries.

Good for you, I am happy that this info is helping out. that's what this site is all about helping each other, enjoy it!!
What type of noise does this help with?

I have this noise when the body flexes coming from the doors.. I wonder if this is what you are talking about?

Take some pics for sure.
Pics and more info

Ok y'all,

Snapped so pics so you'll know what I'm referring to on the weatherstripping fix. It's pretty self explanatory once you see the pics- just pull off the weatherstripping that has the grey trim attached, pop on some felt tape or one side of some velcro stripping, and put it back.

This should eliminate the body flex noises and other noises you all no doubt have like I do. Who'd a thunk weatherstripping could be so noisy!

Anyway, the pics:

damn i was referring to something else. hahah :( I'll try this. Thsi rattling is making me go crazy!
That's more then likely my noises too... I gotta find some of that felt/velcro stuff.
THANK YOU!!!! It truely works!!!!!!!!!!!!! My rattles are all gone!!! I am VERY HAPPY RIGHT NOW! Stupid weather stripping. I did all the doors and the back window. I can't believe it. There is peace and quiet now. I just used the felt side and threw away the rest of it. I bought the velcro at walmart for $13 a box which was around 20feet of the stuff. I actually bought 2 boxes. It is so awesome! Here's a pic of what the box looks like, it's in the crafts dept!! Go buy some now and follow adjmcloon's directions. They worked for me! Damn i'm so happy thank you! Here's a pic of the box.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

I'll work on that this weekend.
Congrats!

I'm very happy for you man. I've been going "Ahhhhhh..." everytime I ride down the road that used to give me fits before. It's so nice to not have the friggin' rattles.

My service guy kept insisting it was my audio install (that I did myself). I can't wait to call him out on it tomorrow- what an asswipe. :)

Nice DVD player you have there too- I like mine as well.

Cheers! :p

Okay so my passenger side rattles reappeared so I go and get some velcro last night and the ride to work this morning was worse? I did not do the entire door so maybe thats the problem, how do you get the lower trim piece off the back door next to the rear seat? I didn't pull up the door sills either but plan on stopping tonight for another 20' of velcro to try and get every inch I guess...
Hmm

So are you sure it's your weatherstripping and not something else?

I did just the top half of my doors, although I am going to do the bottom half this weekend just because. You might have to get wifey to drive you around and see if you can find it.

On a different note, my last trip to the stealership I had an asspile of things for them to fix, almost 1/2 of them rattles. Not only did they not fix them, but the other day when I was doing the weatherstripping project I noticed they had taken my glove box out and not put it back in correctly. One screw at the bottom was 1/2 out and the other one was missing! You'd think they would actually attempt to repair things correctly. Sorry, I had to rant. Nissan service sucks.

Good luck with your rattle chasing, llajumpvid. I've got some very small ones popping up when I go over railroad tracks coming from the console I think, so my chasing isn't over yet, either.

Man, I was all pumped up, went to Walmart, stuck the velcro on, and nothing happened. The flexing and other ugly noises are still there. They are really getting inside my head now.
This morning I pulled everything off the door I could. Door finisher(panel) inside plastic piece next to window.
The noise doesn't change at all.
Now I'm trying to get the weather stripping off that is on the door side around the window. It doesn't pull off??? At least I can't get it off. Anyone know how this rubber stuff comes off?
