Wheel Balance Problem?

2481 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  scr38
OK, I have 20" Wheels on my Mada with 55 series tires. Ever since i got them installed i have had a problem the wheels becoming un-balanced.

The tire guys install the hammer weights on the back of the rim and then stick on weights on the inside surface of the rim.

Has anybody had a lot of problems with balancing issues on their larger wheels?

If so what did you do to fix the poblem?

Thanks.

Have 22's and no problems with being unbalanced.
I also have 22's and no problems. Make sure they are using the hunter road force balancer.
does any body know why the weights keep coming off? is there a better way to balance chrome rims?
Wheel Balance Issues

What is the hub bore size of your wheels. Are they 78mm. If so they will center themselves on the hub, if not you HAVE to torque the lugs evenly while they are still OFF the ground to keep the rim centered. Are you sure the weights are falling off? Take the wheels to someone like Discount Tire who can do a "road-force" balance on your wheels. This simulates driving load on your wheels while balancing.
I agree with FL_Crushin on this issue. Our Armadas have hubcentric applications
meaning the hub is also assisting in holding the weight and centering of the truck and it's wheels besides the lugs. Most after market wheels, unfortunately, require hubcentric rings to fill in the gap between the hub of the truck and the inner bore of the wheel. Failure to install the hubcentric rings can lead to damage to the lugs and/or misbalance of the wheels, but that is under extreme conditions. Like FL_Crushin said, tighten the lug nuts in sequence(even amounts of torque) while the truck is on a jack, just be careful not to strip the lug bolts, then see if you notice any changes for better or worse.
I had wheel balance problems when I changed my wheels to 22" KANE. The truck would vear to one side if I leave hold of the steering wheel. After several trips to the Tire dealers for wheel balancing, I was asked to go for wheel alignment. The alignment people said it was normal to have such problems when you change the original wheels and that they could only improve on the ride slightly. They did some adjustment for $70. There was some improvement in the smoothness but never like when I have the stock wheels.

Having wheels with incorrect offset will cause the veer problems. Stock offset is +25 mm. Aftermarket wheels should have the same.
