Why does my seatbelt keep getting tighter, and tighter, and tighter as I drive? I get the 'tighter if I hit the brakes hard' concept, but it feels to me like it just gets tighter and tighter just traveling down the highway and my foot hasn't been anywhere near the brake!

It's so annoying and I end up feeling like it's suffocating me. Why does it do this and can it be fixed? I've had other cars that did it too, but not nearly this bad.

My front passenger seat belt does the same thing, then it locks so you can no longer move. You have to undo the belt and let it go all the way in to reset itself.

The dealer tried to repair it without success (which I wasn't happy about) and are now going to replace it under warranty.

Tmation, thanks - I'll ask the dealer about it, since it doesn't appear to be a common problem, I'll ask for a replacement or repair.

seat belts in the Mada

If you pull the belt out mor than 3/4 of the total it goes into child restraint mode. All passenger seats have a locking device in the seat belt that rachets the belt tighter and does not loosen so that a child seat can be installed. This is safer for the child, Its explained in the owners manual.

Its not suppposed to be on the drivers seat but I found out early that you wait for the seat memory to move the seat into postition before snapping in. I also, think that the rachet engages if you brake or accelerate hard and it only resets if you let the belt go in all the way and re buckle.
My wife hates the passenger belt too I've tried to get her to change the way she buckles in.... do not pull all the belt out then move to buckle rather pull on the belt and buckle in one contiuous motion

I'll have to try and let the seat get into position before I buckle and see if that helps. I know about the child mode, as I've used it to put my kiddo's carseat in the third row. I don't think I'm pulling it that far out though when I get in.

I think it has something to do with the rachet that's supposed to engage when you hit bumps or brake hard. It's almost like it engages and is too sensitive. I'm literally driving down the road, at a rather lazy 65mph, on a pretty smooth road and the dang thing just keeps getting tighter and tighter. My dealer didn't find anything today when they looked at it....ahhhhh.

Sometimes you get one that does that and you need to replace it. Happens on any car. I'd take it in for a new one.

Oddly enough my new girlfriend complained about this very thing this weekend on a road trip to Myrtle Beach. Guess I'll have to get this fixed at the dealer along with the window rattle.
