Hi Guys,

Just letting you know I am done installing a Garmin 7200 in my Armada. Hope you like it. Let me know if you have any questions.

The only reason I went with a Qx56 look was because I could not get the Nissan Armada Dash Faceplate for the navigation model. So found the Qx56 faceplate on Ebay, it was used and slightly scratched but cheap(you will probably notice it in some of the pics). I am thinking of sanding the entire piece down and then clear coating it in the future, unless you guys have other ideas to hide the scratches?

I just now need a clock. Anyone know how to wire one up? Correct me if I am wrong but 2 wires for illumination, 1 wire for constant power, and 1 wire for ground, right? I figure I can tap the illumination wire from the hazard light switch, constant from the driver side cig lighter, and ground from anywhere most probably from the cig lighter too. I will need all the help on this I can get, so someone please chime in on the subject.

But anyway enjoy the pics, ask anything you want, or ask for more pics(I will try, as long as I don't have to open it up again).

Thanks.

Enjoy more pics. Plus I will post some more pics of the car with evertything out so someone can get an idea of how it looks and maybe attempt something similar.

I would cover the scratches with a wood dash kit like this one.

I was thinking about that, but the problem is I don't have the nav controls on mine, it's the regular rectangle one. So I would have to somehow cut it, which I don't think will turn out so great.

I am also looking for wood trim pieces for the door grab handle to match the finish panel.

But thanks for the idea.

Wow. Looks great so far with the color offset! I like.
Thanks,

I was only going to change the front console trim color to match the infiniti, but decided to do the other pieces.

That kit has the Door Grab Handles, Overhead Bin, and just about everything else you could want. Click on that pic and scroll down to look at all of the pieces included. I was comparing it to your pic and maybe I'm wrong, but yours looks to me that it is the NAV Dash Bezel with the round sides that have been modified. Those square corners are hand cut. I'm pretty sure that's the only way that the QX Bezel is made. The square corners would be for the Armada and would not have the clock. I would still contact Burtman because he's easier to work with for finding the right product, returns, or exchanges than most anyone else. Who knows, he might even be able to have someone modify it for you before shipping.

Contacted Burtman

Thanks for the input BlakSpyda and Pops, contacted Burtman and will wait for reply.

Yeah I did modify the qx56 dash piece, used a dremel for the first time. Thats why I bought the piece off ebay, would have been too scared to try that on a new piece, maybe even mess it up more.

I don't know why, but that picture really brings out flaws. In person you really can't tell that it has been cut.

I have a strong feeling the Wood Kit will be the same way where it'll look great in person. You did an awesome job on that plastic, I almost over looked it but I was too confused how you got a square edged bezel that I just couldn't let it go. :D If you do anywhere near that good on the wood (which looks like it should be easy for you) it will look better than anything that anyone else has.

Nice work, I have the 7200 installed in my armada also. I really like it. Did you have to add a external GPS antenna? I used the built in antenna on mine and it seems to work fine.

Thanks for the compliment, I am hoping that I won't have to cut the wood myself and hopefully Burtman will have a solution for me. Even though you are confident in my abilities, I on the other hand am not.

Thanks,

Actually I believe I saw a post from you that mentioned you installed a 7200, and that's why I even did this mod. I was going to install a Clarion N.I.C.E, so I guess I have you to thank for the inspiration.

I actually installed the antenna as a precaution, I wasn't sure if the system would work well once the bezel was covering it. But good to know that it does work without the antenna, I didn't spend too much on the antenna anyway and I figure it has a wider line of sight.

By the way how is your back-up camera installed, does that warning screen show up everytime it senses a video input? And also did you change the start-up splash screen, I changed it to the nissan logo, it's in one of the pictures that I posted? If you haven't, it's easy and worth doing, and you can put what ever pic you want.

Thanks!!! Haji and Clostoyo were razzin' on me a little in the Integra thread and my avatar got mentioned so I ran across this while trying to find a spider monkey to reply to Clos with. The gif for this little guy really cracked me up, I wish I could use the animation in my avatar but this will have to do. I uploaded a copy of the animated gif to the Integra thread to share a good laugh.

I changed my startup screen also. I have since added Xm radio and pioneer rearview camera to my 7200. The warning screen comes up when you set it to autodetect. If you change it to rear camera detect in the settings and hook up a detection wire, the warning screen does not pop up. One of the gold terminals on the back of the unit controls this. You have to run a wire from that terminal to the wire that comes on when you shift into reverse. It is in the kickpanel. The easiest way to connect the wire is to take the 7200 apart and add the wire on the inside of the unit. I can' t remember if it is the third or fourth terminal, but you can check it with an ohm meter. I also ran my power to the ac/dc terminal on the side of the unit. I ran audio out from the 7200 to the aux input in behind the dash. This way I can hit aux on Armada Bose stereo and listen to navigation, xm, or mp3.

I see that you hooked up your DVD. I did this as well and also put a switch so that I can change from DVD to rearview camera. I think you will enjoy the 7200.

Thanks for the info. I think I will tackle the rear view camera some other time, hopefully by next year. I powered the unit via the ac/dc terminal too, but the audio I left alone, I am letting it play through the unit. I thought a lot about it but finally decided that I could just turn down the radio if I wanted to hear the directions, plus it can be heard quite well; Maybe because I didn't replace the center channel speaker. Did you keep the center speaker? I was worried about the magnet causing problems with the display, I don't think the speaker is magnetically shielded.

As for enjoying the 7200, I like it a lot. Used it for about a month before doing the install.

By the way great job on the install, I tried finding pics of your install some time back, when I was researching to do this, but never found one.

It's kind of late right now but I will try to explain tommorow. Basically I read a lot of posts of people that did the Clarion N.I.C.E install and did the same thing except use a 7200.

This is how I did it. 1st off the mounting cradle will not easily fit, so you have to wire it up without using the cradle. This is not real difficult. The plug that you normally plug the A/C current(House electricity) is the way I power mine. You can get a plug at Radio shack that will fit this. I believe it is size H, but you can check it to make sure. The AC adapter shows on the outside which wire is positive and negative. This must wired correctly. I also put a 2 amp inline fuse between the 12v power source and going into this outlet on the Garmin. If you plan to use the reverse wire you will need to solder on the gold terminal on the back of the garmin also.(I took the unit apart and solder the wire on the inside.) If you use Auto detect, a warning screen will come up everytime you shift into reverse.

I added a wire to trigger the rearview camera on the inside of the 7200.

I have purchased a OEM rear door handle to add a rear camera

As far as mounting, I purchased two rubber tie down straps at Advance Auto. With the navigation housing laying on the floor-face down, lay the garmin on the housing where it fits well. Now take each strap, one across the bottom and the second across the top back side. Take small screws and fasten each end to the side of the navigation housing. Watch your screw lenghts and pick your holes precisely or your screw will come out the front side. After it is fastened you can cut the ends off of the straps and discard. Also make sure the you have the straps stretched when you apply the second screw on each strap. This will help to keep the unit tight against the housing.

When you get ready to place the housing on the dash you will see that the back of the garmin will hit a crossbrace inside of the dash so you will have to remove about 1" or so of this with a dremel in order to get the housing to fit back tight against the dash.

As far as the power button, Once it is turned on you do not have to use the power button anymore. Every time you start up the Armada, it will default to the last power setting. If the 7200 was on when the ignition was turned off, it will come back on automatically.

The internal antenna works fine. No need for external antenna. You can leave the center speaker in as well. Does not interfere with the unit.

I also performed all garmin updates before installing. I loaded a lot of MP3's as well.

You can program your SD card and put it in and leave it. No need to remove it. The card is mainly to store MP3's on. You can also load MP3's directly to the unit without a SD card. I ran a USB cable down into the glove box so that I can perform future updates, but it does not work when you power it through the AC/DC.

There is also only one USB jack(XM radio uses the USB jack) so if you get XM, you will have to pop the dash up to update the 7200.

Whenever I need to make changes to music or update the unit, I take my notebook computer out to the garage and plug the cable in and update it.

I ran the audio line out to the auxillary input on the Bose(wires behind the dash)

If you don't hook it up to the aux, you can run it throught the Fm modulator which is built into the 7200. You tune your radio to a specified frequency and the sound will come out on your FM radio. The other option is to simply install the unit in the OEM housing and let the sound come out of the built in speaker from the Garmin. I had mine this way in the beginning and it works fine. You can hear it very good, it is really quite loud. The only reason I ran mine to the aux is because I wanted to use the MP3 capabilities of the 7200. If you are only using the navigation, I would probably not even hook the audio up to anything and just use the built in 7200 speaker. It will work fine for directions with built in speaker on the 7200. You will be able to hear it just fine from inside the navigation housing. This will keep you from having to run any wire other than the power cable. You may also want to consider running a reverse wire and/or a video input cable to watch the video from the DVD player. I put my DVD player in myself, so I am not sure which wires you would need to tap into on the factory DVD player.

I did not mention it before, but you will also have to trim the top of the radio bezel down about one inch or it will cover up part of the 7200 screen. Do a search for the Clarion Nice and you will see what I am talking about. I have since ordered and installed the front bezel for a armada with navigation unit and it works fine. You have to trim out the four corners on the faceplate, but it is pretty simple.

I ran my DVD player and rearview camera video into a y splitter that goes into the video input on the 7200. I also added a A/B switch. I leave it on DVD normally, but if I am towing, I can switch it to see what I am towing on the screen. You will have to get the Audio/Video cable from Garmin or you can buy one at radio shack that will fit. I got mine at radio shack. It has 3 plugs on one end and goes to one plug on the other end. You can see what it looks like here http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp...0%2D10748%2D00.

I have also added a couple of capacitors. Now when I turn the key to start on the armada and the power goes off for a couple of seconds, the capacitors store enough energy to keep both the 7200 and the DVD player powered and they do not have to reboot.

Hope this helps.

Great Explanation

Wow white night, great explanation could not have explained it any better. Great job. Now all you need is some pictures and you can have a great how-to.

I have some pic's of the car dismantled if anyone wants to see what they are getting into. Let me know and I will post it.

I guess I will be putting the center speaker back. Very insightfull about the capacitors never even really thought about it that much, might have to add that to mine also.
